Most hand painted windows are created using water based paints, allowing safe and straightforward removal after a campaign. I prefer using reclaimed household paint for sustainability, though other artists may use acrylic paint, chalk pens, paint pens or spray snow. These can all be removed using similar methods.
Reclaimed paints. A more environmental option.
The quickest and cleanest way to remove most window paint is with a professional glass scraper. These are inexpensive and widely available online. Dry paint scrapings can then be easily swept or vacuumed from the floor. For more stubborn areas, spray the artwork with a standard window cleaner to soften the paint. Once damp, the paint usually lifts much more easily with a scraper.
I use a glass scraper, window cleaner, a cloth and a dustpan and brush.
After removing the main artwork, any remaining paint flecks can be wiped away using window cleaner and a non abrasive cloth or paper towel. Warm soapy water also works well. Harsh chemicals should be avoided as they may damage glass coatings or window frames.
While removal is not included within my commissions, I always provide a glass scraper and I am happy to advise clients on safe and effective paint removal after their campaign ends.

Willa
